Royal Clipper · Barbados → Martinique
The Case for Going
The world's largest full-rigged sailing ship. The islands that shaped Age of Sail mythology. Evening literary programming. Days entirely your own.
Royal Clipper isn't a cruise ship pretending to be something else. She's a five-masted, square-rigged clipper carrying 227 guests through the same waters that shaped the golden age of sail. The ship IS the story.
Early & Away is building a literary retreat aboard — four curated reading tracks, evening-only programming, and a week of islands that don't appear on mass-market itineraries. Your days are free. Your evenings are the retreat.
Royal Clipper is a full-rigged sailing ship — the same type of vessel that appears in the books you'll be reading. You're not learning about the Age of Sail from a lecture hall. You're standing on it.
Dominica. Iles des Saintes. St. Kitts. These are the islands the big ships skip — volcanic, literary, and worth the extra effort to reach.
The retreat happens after sunset. During the day you explore islands, swim, read on deck, or do nothing at all. No packed schedule. No guilt about missing sessions.
Age of Sail, Literary Caribbean, Pirates & the Golden Age, The Atlantic World. Pick your track or wander between them — the evening discussions will be richer either way.
Life Aboard
Reading Tracks
Each track gives you a lens for the week. You're not locked in — read across tracks, skip sessions, join the ones that call to you. But having a framework makes the conversations better.
The history and literature of wind-powered ocean travel — the ships, the navigation, the human stories of crossing oceans before engines.
The islands as writers have rendered them — from Derek Walcott to Jamaica Kincaid to Andrea Levy. The landscape you'll see by day, reimagined each evening.
The real history behind the mythology. Privateers, buccaneers, and the economic systems that created them — read in the waters where it happened.
The broader story of the Atlantic as a connected space — trade, migration, colonialism, and the literary traditions that emerged from all of it.
The Route
Barbados → St. Lucia → Dominica → Antigua → St. Kitts → Iles des Saintes → Martinique. Each island has its own literary history, its own story to tell. You'll arrive by sail and leave by sunset.
