For Writers
Research travel designed for writers who need to understand a place before writing about it.
Why Research Travel
You can find a city's history in books. You can study its architecture in photographs. You can read first-person accounts, track down census records, pull up satellite views of streets you've never walked.
And none of it will tell you what the air smells like after rain, or how sound carries differently in a narrow alley than on an open square, or why the locals cross the street where they do instead of where the crosswalk is.
Some things can only be learned by being there. Early & Away exists for writers who've reached the point in their research where the next step isn't another database — it's a plane ticket.
Research Travel Planning
Every Research Travel Planning engagement begins with a conversation. We talk about what you're working on, why the place matters, how you tend to work when you travel, and what kind of structure supports your attention. From there, we design an itinerary shaped around your research goals and handle all bookings and logistics.
You travel independently, with the confidence that someone who understands writers has thought through every detail.

Don't see your destination? We work globally and welcome inquiries for any location that serves your research.
Field Studies
Once or twice a year, Early & Away convenes a small group of writers for an immersive research journey to a single destination. These are not workshops or retreats in the traditional sense — there are no assignments, critique sessions, or productivity expectations.
Field Studies are outward-facing by design. They're about entering a place, not escaping one. About learning how a city, landscape, or community functions before trying to turn it into material. The primary work is attention. Writing is welcome. It's never required.
Each Field Study runs 7-10 days with 8-15 participants.
Ways to Work Together
Join a trip as a guest author — lead a discussion, join the evening programming, and spend time with readers who came because of books like yours.
We're exploring writer-specific retreats — small groups, atmospheric locations, structured writing time. If you're interested, let's talk.
Celtic romantasy in Ireland. Gothic fiction in Transylvania. Age of Sail in the Caribbean. If your genre has a landscape, we're probably building a trip there.
